You know it's time to remove yourself from an unhealthy situation when seeing an email pop in your in-box from a particular person makes your stomach hurt and your shoulders tense. We are all volunteers here and we are all working (allegedly) for the same goal - to help our children at our school.
I don't need this drama. I'm almost 40 years old and I'm being reduced to tears by this person?! Thankfully Kristen talked me down from the tree and helped rewrite my original email to this person. Kristen's version was professional and sane while still getting my point across to this individual. I really wanted to say something else but Kristen reminded me that email lives forever and folks not close to the situation would see this crazed WWF mom instead of the sane person (work with me) that I am.
I sent the email and already feel 10 pounds lighter. Now only if that could also work on my hips and thighs.
These are the only monkeys I want on my back:

+ It stinks when you can't be two places at once. The two older kids had soccer games at the same time so we had to split our morning. I went to MG's game while G coached KK's last game for the season. I missed KK's awesome goal (G got it on video though) but did get to see MG rock the first game (she scored 2 goals). Then I had to leave to take KK to a birthday party. I missed the second game but they did end up winning both games at the tournament. If you ask MG what the best part of the weekend was, she'll tell you "the foam finger." The league gave hundreds of 7 year olds foam fingers. I bet all the parents and siblings enjoyed their rides home that afternoon. (not!)
+ Watching your son ice skate for the first time takes nerves of steel. KK went to a friend's party at the ice rink and he has never been on ice before...at least in skates. He was pretty brave and took the ice with these tiny tiny steps, not so much gliding as it was scooching on ice. I'm pretty sure he spent one of the two hours on his bottom but I was so proud that he did not give up. He kept going even as other kids sped past him.
+ It gets harder to shop for Christmas gifts as kids get older. And I'm only talking 8-9 years old. Any ideas for an almost 9 year-0ld boy?
+ Kind of knew this already but there are so many bloggers who are so generous in sharing their creativity & ideas. Look at what Cathe from Just Something I Made created - a "Thank You Veterans" sign. Perfect for tomorrow. Remember our brave Veterans.
Check out what else I've learned and come share your lessons at Musings of a Housewife's What I learned this week.

I just can't stand those situations that make your body ache, or your head pound, or your ears burn. Can't stand them. I read a book called Crucial Conversations. Great book for helping you to get your point across without going crazy and has some neat techniques for preparing for sticky or grueling conversations.
Great picture of your 3 monkeys.
They are so sweet.
So..any response from the emailer??? :)
It is hard to shop for kids when they get older. It actually helps though when they are specific about what they want. I haven't even started thinking about what to buy!!
I love the picture!!! Really nice.
I'm glad you're done with all that mess...will give you more time to enjoy the holidays and your family, without having that stress.
My daughter is in preschool and I tense up at the sight of a few of the other moms. I can't stand how the try to out-do each other at everything. Isn't it supposed to be about the kids!?
I'm glad you got that monkey off your back. Enjoy your holidays and family!
I currently have a situation just like yours. It's not a good feeling at all! I have been ignoring it, mainly bc I am sick, and my kids are sick, but know I need to address it and get it off my back once and for all!
When you are volunteering there is no reason at all that you should feel the way she is making you feel. I have had both good and bad experiences with volunteering. Glad you did the right thing in response to the email...your friend is right...the emails stick around FOREVER and they can be passed around quickly.
I say go with your cute monkeys...thats all you want on your back.
Love the photo! Just adorable!
Ideas:
For my turning-8 year old boy:
Fossil Fighters for DS
LEGO Indian Jones set
KNEX set
Snap circuit (look this up on Amazon) 300 piece set
So sorry you had to deal with that. I don't like confrontations either, makes my stomach hurt. Isn't it sad though that we don't even have PTO here =(
My boys like Tech Deck right now. I'm also going to get an Ed Emberly Drawing Book from Amazon.
Oh, the good old days of PTA. Yes, there can be a lot of drama. I don't know what yours was but don't let it get to you. It's great that your in PTA though.
I hope the situation is resolved after you sent your email. What is it with some people?
I love the picture of the kids!
So glad you had a friend to help you re-write. Hope the whole situation now improves. Life has enough drama without others adding to it!
Present ideas? - Lego, playmobile, meccano?
LOVE the picture of your cute little monkeys. Sorry about the lame PTO lady. I just don't get people sometimes.
good for you getting that off your chest in a professional way. I hope that she responds with the same respect. Your monkeys are sooooo cute.
Nerf guns.
Oh, a situation that makes your body hurt is screaming to be taken care of. I'm glad you followed your feelings to do so.
Cute photo!
I'm having trouble with Christmas too. Everything they want is so expensive!
Sounds like my husband and I... One of us will begin the letter writing process "Dear Jerk..." and then the other steps in and "nicens" it up a little.
During the summer, my boys(4 and 8 at the time) got Martian Matter as a gift. It's this goo that you can press into martian shaped forms and make ... martians! Kind of gross, it comes with a knife and you can cut them up if you want. It kept them busy for HOURS. And they didn't fight at all. I swear. I am going out to buy some refills for that this year as stocking stuffers. Best. gift. ever.
Ugh, I'm sorry to hear that the monkey is back. I hope this whole situation gets resolved SOON!
That is a beautiful picture of your three monkeys!! Much cuter and sweeter and lighter. :)
It sounds like you should own stock in a gas company with all that running around!! You are the epitome of soccer mom, Jen. :)
Ok, So I read this yesterday on my phone and couldn't comment (frustrating when that happens) and now I can't remember what profound thing I planned on saying so I will just say VOLUNTEERING SHOULD BE FUN...and when it is not RUN. So you and your monkey did the right thing.
Great post! And yes, email is forever, lol. I found that out once when a monkey on my back got an eyeful of my 'real' thoughts years ago. Not pretty and can't be retracted, lol. GOod choice in whatever you did to revamp the original I'm sure! :)
I just love coming over here and seeing the smiling faces on your kids. Gives me hope in this dark world.
That whole situation just sounds so awful... I'm so sorry about it. Did she email you back or is it well and truly *over?* And I love the photo of the three monkeys on your back. They are ADORABLE.
My RSS feed is getting soooo big it's taking me forever to get around to all the posts I want to read, but I finally got to this one! Hurray! I am glad Kristen was able to help you deal with that email and you can finally breathe easy again for a little while at least. Congrats to your kids on their great games!
