what I learned this week...hero

I have been in/out of the kids' school since school started. I'm there so much that I'm recognized by the rest of the staff, not just my kids' teachers. It's also been fun to peek in on the classrooms - what I would give to be a fly on the wall.

KK's third grade class put together "about me" posters. I am always intrigued by KK's answers. He's my no-b.s. kid, no fluff, he says what he says and that's that. Very much like his dad.

So when I came across his poster I was so surprised to see who he put down as his hero.

In case you can't read his writing behind all the magenta...that would be me!

"My Mom because she always takes care of me."

Short, sweet and to the point.

I was floored and quite surprised. The two of us have not exactly been getting along since school started. We've been butting heads (stubborn meet more stubborn) and seeing this made my heart melt.

I was floating on air and called G with the news. He took the news well.

Of course I had to find out why KK picked me when there are so many other heros he could choose from. I just had to know.

Here's where my lessons come in.

I learned:

1) kids are honest (mine haven't picked up on the concept of a little white lie yet)

2) sometimes the truth stings

KK told me that he picked me for his hero because last year he picked Daddy so he picked me this year - to be fair. That was his reason.

Ouch. {cue sound of feet hitting ground - hard}

I should have let it go and basked in the glow of "I'm my son's hero" but oh no I had to dig deep into the psyche of an 8 year old boy.

Talk about a blow to the ego but now I have proof (photo, blog and paper).

I am my son's hero.

Until next year.

Check out what I've learned and come share your lessons at Musings of a Housewife's What I learned this week.

Hey, at least he's trying to be fair. One of mine asked me yesterday why I always had to ruin the fun. Haha!!!

I guess I'd better not ask Kate why she picked me...

Too funny. Well you must have taught him well about taking turns. So I am guessing next year you won't be surprised if it is Dad again:) Cute.

That is so sweet : ) It's ok that you only get to be a hero for one year. That is still a lot of days of hero-ness! Revel in it!
