where's mom (37 of 52)

You belong with me-eee-eee. Rocking out with Band Hero!

I got an early birthday present for myself ;) Pre-release pricing + my win from Life with 3 Boybarians + free shipping = great deal!

Do you know it takes a lot of lung power to carry out those long Taylor Swift riffs? I can hear Randy Jackson saying "dawg, way to rock it...just watch your pitch."

Highly entertaining although G recommends ear plugs since carrying a tune is not my forte.

what I learned this week...

+ how to get a monkey off my back. This week has been an interesting lesson in organization dynamics. Remember how I was having issues with someone in the PTA? Was is the key word. I thought I was done with all the drama but unfortunately the same issue someone reared its ugly head last week.

You know it's time to remove yourself from an unhealthy situation when seeing an email pop in your in-box from a particular person makes your stomach hurt and your shoulders tense. We are all volunteers here and we are all working (allegedly) for the same goal - to help our children at our school.

I don't need this drama. I'm almost 40 years old and I'm being reduced to tears by this person?! Thankfully Kristen talked me down from the tree and helped rewrite my original email to this person. Kristen's version was professional and sane while still getting my point across to this individual. I really wanted to say something else but Kristen reminded me that email lives forever and folks not close to the situation would see this crazed WWF mom instead of the sane person (work with me) that I am.

I sent the email and already feel 10 pounds lighter. Now only if that could also work on my hips and thighs.

These are the only monkeys I want on my back:

+ It stinks when you can't be two places at once. The two older kids had soccer games at the same time so we had to split our morning. I went to MG's game while G coached KK's last game for the season. I missed KK's awesome goal (G got it on video though) but did get to see MG rock the first game (she scored 2 goals). Then I had to leave to take KK to a birthday party. I missed the second game but they did end up winning both games at the tournament. If you ask MG what the best part of the weekend was, she'll tell you "the foam finger." The league gave hundreds of 7 year olds foam fingers. I bet all the parents and siblings enjoyed their rides home that afternoon. (not!)

+ Watching your son ice skate for the first time takes nerves of steel. KK went to a friend's party at the ice rink and he has never been on ice before...at least in skates. He was pretty brave and took the ice with these tiny tiny steps, not so much gliding as it was scooching on ice. I'm pretty sure he spent one of the two hours on his bottom but I was so proud that he did not give up. He kept going even as other kids sped past him.

+ It gets harder to shop for Christmas gifts as kids get older. And I'm only talking 8-9 years old. Any ideas for an almost 9 year-0ld boy?

+ Kind of knew this already but there are so many bloggers who are so generous in sharing their creativity & ideas. Look at what Cathe from Just Something I Made created - a "Thank You Veterans" sign. Perfect for tomorrow. Remember our brave Veterans.

Check out what else I've learned and come share your lessons at Musings of a Housewife's What I learned this week.

out of the mouths of babes

My 4 year old calling his big brother "shankapotamous".

Ahh. The power of the magic box.

+++

My 6 year old over-achiever asking "is 15 minutes over?" over and over.

I keep answering "yes, you've already read for 15 minutes." My curiosity peaks after the third time. I walk over to find she is completing a week's worth of reading in one afternoon. She has to read 15 minutes/day and already read 5 days worth.

I ask her "why?" and she says "because I want to." She must have some other important things going on her calendar that I'm not aware of.

+++

My 8 year old telling me that the tv "is not too loud" (playing MarioKart) even though he answers "HUH?!?!" when I tell him to turn the tv down.

Ahh. The power of the magic box.

Proud.

Using a prompt from Mama Kat. This week I chose, "Describe something -one you're proud of."

In this case, I will use this post to tell you how proud I am of...

...my husband, the worker. He works hard so he can provide for our family. So I can stay home with our children. And who just took a new position within his company!

...my husband, the coach. He coaches three soccer teams. He holds 2 practices twice a week and has 3 games on Saturdays.

Photobucket

...my husband, the teacher. He's a great example - stand up for what you believe in. He teaches our children about faith. He teaches us about patience and how to laugh at one's self. He teaches us that sometimes it's not quite the result you expected but that doesn't matter - it's how you got there is what counts. He teaches us to be kind.

...my husband, the advocate. He's been in front of the School Board so many times, they know him by name now. (Unfortunately they know his name.)

...my husband, the jokester. Who else would stuff an entire cupcake in his mouth for a laugh? Or teach his child how to arm-toot? Or dress up for Halloween?

Photobucket

...my husband, the protector. He makes sure we're safe. He locks the doors at night, he checks the air pressure on the silver bullet (aka minivan) and remembers to remove MG's earrings before her soccer games.

Photobucket

Photobucket

...my husband, Handy Manny. Who else would unclog a toilet, change the oil, mow the lawn or paint a room?

...my husband, the husband. He keeps me sane, he makes me laugh and he gets me.

...my husband, the father. A dad who stops what he's doing to explain why leaves change color. A dad who can make a fort out of pillows and blankets. A dad who has the patience to build lego sets. A dad who loves learning from his children.

video
(this video was originally posted on his birthday and pretty much says it all)

He's a good man, a better husband and the best dad.

And I make sure to tell him every day (ok, maybe every other day) we're blessed to have him in our lives.
